Self-Serve Water Station
After learning about the environmental impact of bottled water in a Counter Culture Coffee class in 2019, Rae Anne Kinney, owner of Pine Scone, immediately stopped selling bottled water at her cafes. But switching to using filtered tap water came with its own set of struggles.
Pine Scone Cafe currently charges customers a small fee for water because of the expenses incurred providing plastic cups, lids, and straws. If a customers forgets to ask for water with their order, staff then are not comfortable charging for it. Providing a self-service water station would encourage customers to refill their own tumblers or grab and fill provided washable cups.
While there is currently filtered water piped to a sink in the front of house customer area, the Health Department does not allow it to be used for drinking water since it is also a handwashing sink. This Bloom fund will cover the cost of installing a gooseneck water filling spout that taps into the same filtered water line. The self-service water station will be free and help Pine Scone Cafe cut back significantly on single-use plastics.
